Catholic rosary

Catholic prayer beads — the rosary (from Latin rosarium, “rose garden”) — refer both to the strand itself and to the sequence of prayers tied to it. It is one of the most recognizable counting strands of Western Christianity: the prayers are repeated along it while meditating on events from the lives of Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary.

Structure of the strand

The classic rosary has 59 beads and a crucifix. Most of it forms a closed loop of five “decades” — groups of ten small beads separated by a single large bead — giving 50 small and 5 large beads in the ring. A short “tail” hangs from the loop: a connecting medal, then one large and three small beads, another large bead, and a crucifix at the end.

Materials are traditionally modest and varied — wood, bone, glass, metal, semi-precious stone; rosaries pressed from rose petals, echoing the name itself, are also common. Compact forms exist too: single-decade “soldier’s” rosary rings and bracelet strands.

How the rosary is prayed

Prayer begins at the crucifix (the Apostles’ Creed), then the tail beads carry the Our Father and three Hail Marys. In the loop, each decade is devoted to one “mystery”: the Our Father is said on the large bead, the Hail Mary on each of the ten small beads while meditating on the corresponding Gospel event, closing with a doxology.

The “mysteries” are grouped into sets — Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious, and, since 2002, the Luminous mysteries added by Pope John Paul II. A full round of five decades is prayed in one session, usually keeping one set of mysteries in mind for a given day.

History

The practice of repeated, counted prayer in Christianity goes back to early monasticism, where counts were kept on knots and pebbles. The Hail Mary and counting on beads took shape during the Middle Ages; tradition links the rosary’s spread to the Dominican order and the figure of Saint Dominic, though historians treat this more as pious legend than documented fact. The familiar form of five decades with sets of mysteries was settled by the 16th century.

The rosary remains a living, everyday devotion for millions of Catholics worldwide — at once a prayer tool, an object of craft, and a personal keepsake.
