Elephant ivory is exceptionally dense, with a silky warm tone and a fine Schreger pattern whose line angles are sharper than mammoth's — the very feature by which experts tell the two apart. More on the material’s properties in the “elephant ivory” section.
The maker carefully balances calibre and the gap between grains: too tight and the flow bogs down, too loose and the rhythm is lost, so well-judged peribory are prized for their measured, almost musical run.
