Water buffalo horn is one of the warmest and most pleasant materials for worry beads, and entirely untroubled ethically: the domestic water buffalo has been raised across Asia for millennia, and the horn is a by-product requiring no separate harvest. By nature it is keratin, the same material as nails and hair, so horn feels alive and warms quickly in the hand. Colour ranges from deep black and graphite to honey, amber, and mottled tortoiseshell, depending on the part of the horn; dark buffalo horn can show a beautiful translucency against the light. The maker cuts, grinds, and polishes each bead to a deep, almost mirror shine that is especially striking on black material. In the hand buffalo horn is noticeably lighter than bone and dentine, warm almost instantly, with a smooth, faintly warm surface that is a delight to tell. The sound is soft, quiet, warm, with a gentle woody-horn click and no ring. Patina builds beautifully: the surface grows deeper and richer, and dark horn takes on a mirror-like depth. Care calls for attention to dryness: horn dislikes prolonged moisture and direct heat and can crack if it dries out, so it benefits from an occasional wipe with a thin layer of neutral oil and storage away from radiators and sun. These beads are chosen for their warm living character, lightness, and noble shine — an excellent choice for daily telling and for those who value natural keratin free of ethical questions.
