micarta
Micarta is a composite of layered fabric (cotton, linen, paper, sometimes jute or denim) impregnated with thermosetting resin and pressed under high heat and pressure. The material was originally created for electrical insulation and technical use, and later became a favorite of knifemakers for its strength and pleasantly "warm" texture; in worry beads, micarta comes into its own beautifully. Micarta worry beads are valued because, as they are turned, the layers reveal a fine striped or "mountain-range" pattern unique to each bead — in effect a cross-section of compressed fabric. The material is tough, unbothered by moisture and sweat, resists cracking and impact, and holds an edge. The feel is distinctive: slightly "velvety," with a soft matte or satin sheen, warmer than stone and nicer than cold plastic; with handling it gradually builds a soft luster and a deeper tone — the prized hand patina. The weight is moderate, close to dense wood, and the roll is even and calm. Spun, the sound is quiet, soft, and matte, with no ring — restrained and comfortable for long handling. Care could not be simpler: micarta is nearly indestructible, a wipe with a cloth is enough; the shine can be refreshed with a light polish if desired. Micarta suits those who want reliable, practical everyday beads with the character of a handmade object — for active carry, for anyone who values tactile warmth, low maintenance, and a unique pattern that only grows more expressive over time.
